SUPPORT THE CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK
We need your help…
At HMQS 2008, May 8–10, 2008, Meander Publishing and the show’s organizers team up for the ‘Cards for Kids’ exhibit and sale, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) a non-profit organization founded in 1983 by the Osmond family and headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. The cards will be available at the show in the Meander Publishing Booth, #404, and will be offered for sale at $25.
We ask that you consider donating a quilted postcard, 4" × 6", with a children’s theme. The cards can be stitched, embroidered, painted, beaded, felted and embellished in any way. Use your creativity! Please be sure that any three-dimensional embellishments are securely attached. Please sign your card and include your city and state or country. No other rules except be generous and have fun! Multiple card donations cheerfully accepted!
Cards can be sent to Meander Publishing, Cards For Kids, PO Box 918, Fort Lupton, CO 80621, to be received no later than April 25, 2008. Email us at info@upquiltmag.com if you have any questions.
Have a Heart Quilt Competition 2008
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the largest single cause of mortality among women, accounting for 38 percent of all deaths among females. That’s one in three women. Each one of us is affected by these staggering statistics. More research, funds and attention need to be directed to this very serious health issue. At Meander Publishing, we are committed to bringing focus to this effort. We are announcing the Second Annual ‘Have A Heart’ Quilt Competition, open to all machine quilters. This competition will directly benefit the American Heart Association in its efforts to educate women about CVD.
This year we ask that you donate a quilt no larger than 36” on any side. Multiple entries are allowed. Quilts must have a heart theme, a recognizable heart motif, and be machine quilted. You can use any embellishments, techniques or designs, so long as they are original. Entries must be received no later than JUNE 30, 2008. There will be two main prize categories, Best Machine Quilting and Best Interpretation of the Theme, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons being awarded in each. Additionally there will be Judge’s Choice Awards, as well as a Publisher’s Choice Award, chosen by the staff at Meander Publishing. All awards will also have a cash and/or product prize. The Publisher’s Choice winning quilt will be used as future promotion in our campaign for this annual competition and will be exhibited in our booth at quilt shows. Winners will be announced August 23, 2008 at the Rocky Mountain Creative Quilter’s Show in Loveland, Colorado, where we will have the first viewing of the 2008 Competition Quilts.

The donated quilts will be auctioned in the fall of 2008 and 100% of the auction proceeds will go to the American Heart Association for their Go Red For Women education campaign. Check out their website www.goredforwomen.org. Please consider making a quilt for this worthy cause.

Announcing Meander Publishing Scholarship Fund
We at Meander Publishing believe that continuing education for professional machine quilters is the key to a successful business plan. To that end we have created a SCHOLARSHIP FUND, designed to assist a professional machine quilter with their expenses related to classes, major show attendance, or the purchase of educational books or DVDs. These scholarships are not based on financial need alone, but also on a commitment from the recipient to pass on the knowledge gained to further the education of others in their field.
We also have dedicated one level of the fund to Staff Sgt Joshua Hager, son of our 2007 recipient Lois Hager Knight of Broomfield Colorado. Shortly after awarding Lois the opportunity to attend the 2007 MQX Show, we learned that Josh was killed in action in Ramadi, Iraq. Josh was a quilt lover and a huge supporter of his Mother’s work.
